Lady Underrated

“Sometimes you can have the smallest role in the smallest production and still have a big impact.” – Neil Patrick Harris

Underrated actresses. Where do I start? The thing about actresses is that they have a shelf-life. Male actors can go on acting till they have one foot in the grave, but female actors usually made to retire after they have a kid, or develop a few wrinkles, or only in Betty White’s case, never. The only roles they get are of mothers, mother-in-laws, or cougars. I think the females in the industry as a whole, are quite underrated, yet, there are few that stand out with stellar performances in Hollywood.

5. Vanessa Williams

Controversy’s child, she had a rocky start as she was the first African-American to be crowned Miss America, a title she had to later relinquish as nude photos of her surfaced. Former fashion model, producer, singer and actress, Vanessa still remains quite an underrated actress. From playing the editor diva, Wilhelmina Slater in Ugly Betty, a vixen on Desperate Housewives, to the devil’s wife, Olivia Doran on 666 Park Avenue, Vanessa Williams seems perfect for these roles. Quite recently, she voiced the character of Beggum the Leopard in the English version of Delhi Safari.

4. Paz Vega

Star of 7 Vidas, the Spanish version of Friends, Paz Vega is a household name due to her many delightful appearances in many Spanish sitcoms. Many mistake her for Penelope Cruz, and some claim that they could be doppelgangers; Paz has gone on to appear in the Adam Sandler comedy Spanglish in a supporting role opposite him. Her claim-to-fame seems to (one of my favourites) 10 Items or Less where she co-starred with Morgan Freeman.

3. Rachel Bilson

The O.C. sweetheart, I grew up watching Rachel Bilson play the darling – Summer Roberts on this hugely popular teen drama. Bilson went on to play supporting roles in films like Jumper and New York, I Love You. With appearances in show like Chuck, That 70’s Show and How I Met Your Mother, Rachel Bilson plays the lead role in the Southern inspired Hart of Dixie. This little wonder still remains on the list of highly underrated actresses, though she has quite the media presence.

2. Lizzy Caplan

Janis Ian of Mean Girls, Amy Burley of True Blood, and Marlena Diamond of Cloverfeild, Lizzy Caplan is faultlessly suited for these diverse roles that requires her to play a gothic teen, a drug addict and a sarcastic smartass. After receiving several nominations for Best Supporting Actress, and being on the ’10 Actors to Watch’ list, Lizzy went on to play the Sonja Ralston, sister of the stranded hiker in the movie 127 Hours, which is based on a true story.

1. Naya Rivera

Confession time. This woman is the only reason why I watch Glee a highly popular teen/musical comedy. I have the biggest lady crush on her. Naya Rivera plays the sassy, the smart, the sexy, Santana Lopez, addressing issues of bullying, homosexuality and racism. Naya Rivera started off as a sidekick on the show, and now is one of the series regular. She plays the headstrong lesbian who goes out of her way to protect her friends and her girlfriend, and still gets what she wants and won’t apologize for nothing. Naya has a fabulous, in-your-face voice and sings saucy numbers on the show. She is proud of her varied heritage and uses it to her advantage. This one woman seems to be quite underrated when it come to famous actresses. I sure hope we get to see more of her in the future. She absolutely is Lady Underrated.
